CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR COSMETOLOGY

ARTS AND SCIENCES

​​​​Iowa Board of Cosmetology Arts & Sciences (1.2019)

 

The biennial continuing education compliance period shall begin on April 1 of one year and end on March 31 two years later.

 

Cosmetology License Continuing Education Requirements (No Instructor’s License)

  • First renewal period after becoming licensed: NO continuing education is required until the 2nd renewal. Remember to complete the renewal and pay the fee or your license will become INACTIVE. 

  • One active cosmetology related license: 6 hours of continuing education including at least 4 hours specific to the licensed discipline and at least 2 hours specific to Iowa cosmetology rules and laws and infection control.

  • Two active cosmetology related licenses: 10 hours of continuing education including at least 4 hours specific to each licensed discipline and at least 2 hours specific to Iowa cosmetology rules and laws and infection control.

  • Three active cosmetology related licenses: 14 hours of continuing education, including at least 4 hours specific to each licensed discipline and at least 2 hours specific to Iowa cosmetology rules and laws and infection control.

Cosmetology License Continuing Education Requirements (With Instructor’s License)

 

In addition to the requirements outlined above instructors wishing to renew the instructor’s license must take 6 hours in teaching methodology.

 

For example, an instructor with two active cosmetology related licenses will need a total of 16 hours of continuing education.

 

4 hours specific to the discipline of esthetics

 

+ 4 hours specific to the discipline of nail technology

 

+ 2 hours specific to Iowa cosmetology rules and laws and infection control

 

+ 6 hours of teaching methodology

 

16 hours for instructors with two active cosmetology arts and sciences licensed disciplines

A licensee currently licensed in Iowa but practicing exclusively in another state may comply with Iowa continuing education requirements for license renewal by meeting the continuing education requirements of the state or states where the licensee practices. The licensee living and practicing in a state which has no continuing education requirement for renewal of a license shall not be required to meet Iowa’s continuing education requirement but shall pay all renewal fees when due.

 

licensee shall be deemed to have complied with the continuing education requirements of this state during periods that the licensee:

(1) Serves honorably on active duty in the military services, or

(2) Is the spouse of an active-duty military service person, or

(3) Is a government employee working in the person’s licensed specialty and assigned to duty outside of the United         States, or

(4) Is engaged in active practice and absence from the state approved by the board

Requirements of new licensees. Those persons licensed for the first time shall not be required to complete continuing education as a prerequisite for the first renewal of their licenses. Continuing education hours acquired anytime from the initial licensing until the second license renewal may be used.

Cosmetology Certifications do NOT require Continuing Education - Licensees performing chemical peels or microdermabrasion, using a certified laser product or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) for hair removal must be certified by the board to perform those services. Continuing education is NOT required to renew these certifications.

ARE YOU AN APPROVED CONTINUING EDUCATION PROVIDER?

The Iowa Board of Cosmetology Arts & Sciences does not approve CE Providers but requires continuing education hours for license renewal. Center of Attraction Hair Gallery’s education meets the requirements for continuing education hours.

HOW DO I RENEW MY COSMETOLOGY LICENSE?

You can renew your license (s) up to 60 days before your current license expires.

You may begin the renewal process on January 31 the year the license expires. You may review your current wallet card for the expiration date. All continuing education requirements must be completed prior to license renewal.

IS ANYONE EXEMPT FROM THE CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENT?

The licensee living and practicing in a state which has no continuing education requirement for renewal of a license shall not be required to meet Iowa’s continuing education requirement but shall pay all renewal fees when due.

A licensee shall be deemed to have complied with the continuing education requirements of this state during periods that the licensee:

  1. Serves honorably on active duty in the military services, or

WILL YOU PROVIDE ME WITH A CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION?

Yes, you will be emailed a downloadable certificate of completion to maintain for your records.

DO I NEED TO SHOW MY CERTIFICATE TO IDPH TO PROVE THAT I COMPLETED MY CONTINUING EDUCATION HOURS?

When you renew your license, you may be asked to show proof that you have completed your continuing education hours, so make sure to save a copy of your certificate of completion.

WILL YOU REPORT MY COMPLETED HOURS TO THE BOARD?

No, we will send you a certificate of completion as proof that you have completed your continuing education hours.
